MODERN OSCILLOSCOPES WITH SPECTRUM ANALYSIS FUNCTION
Modern power networks at production and construction sites, electrical workshops, and other industrial facilities are saturated with various converters, inverters, and other electronic devices. These create additional interference and introduce harmonics and non-sinusoidal distortions into the power supply. Such parasitic harmonics interfere with the normal operation of electronic systems, leading to excessive energy consumption, unexplained shutdowns, equipment overheating, and more. Therefore, electricians and power engineers are often faced with the task of detecting and evaluating the number of harmonics — in other words, performing spectrum analysis.
There is a whole class of instruments designed for this purpose — spectrum analyzers, but their high cost and complexity of setup make this solution excessively expensive.
However, there is a more cost-effective solution. Not everyone knows that all digital oscilloscopes supplied by us are equipped with a built-in FFT (Fast Fourier Transform) mathematical function that works as a spectrum analyzer. It breaks down the measured signal into harmonic components and displays their levels. The resulting spectrum is sufficiently informative for most applications (the spectrum is shown by a red line).
HOW TO ENABLE THIS FUNCTION
Usually, the spectrum analyzer function is “hidden” within mathematical functions that electricians rarely use in everyday practice. In different models, this function is often placed on the front panel as a separate button, but sometimes it is accessed via the menu.
For example, in UTD series portable oscilloscopes, the math function button is located on the front panel:

To search for and evaluate harmonic levels, an expensive and complex spectrum analyzer is not always required. In most cases, an affordable digital oscilloscope with an FFT function is sufficient. All digital oscilloscope models supplied by us are equipped with this function and allow analysis of the spectrum of any voltage.
